What is TMJ? Gilbert, AZ

Temporomanibular joint disorder is a common disorder known as TMJ. TMJ means that the hinge joint connecting the upper and lower jaw is not working. This hinge is one of the most complex joints in the body. The temporomanibular joint is responsible of moving the lower jaw forward, backward and side-to-side. Any problem that arises in this joint that prevents the system of muscles, ligaments, discs and bones from working properly is called TMJ. If you feel as though your jaw is popping, clicking or “getting stuck” for a moment, often, this is because of TMJ disorder. What causes this misalignment to the joint is typically impossible to determine.
