What is the association between diabetes and oral health?
Diabetes may affect oral health and your oral health may affect your diabetes. Studies show that gun disease may be more difficult to eliminate or manage in patients that have diabetes. When blood sugar levels are poorly controlled, some oral health conditions may develop such as, periodontitis, tooth loss, thrush, an infection and dry mouth. Recent evidence suggests that periodontitis may adversely affect a person with diabetes in controlling the blood levels. When you have diabetes, maintaining good oral health is important. Here are a few things to remember:
- Follow physician’s instructions and control your blood sugar levels.
- Go for regular dental checks and make sure your dentist is aware of your diabetes and any medications you are taking.
- Brush and floss twice a day.
