What is it?
Periodontitis is a group of conditions. All of them involve inflammation of the gums and other structures that support the teeth. Often, the disease starts at gingivitis.
This disease is caused by bacteria that attach to teeth at the gum line and result in infection. As your body fights the infection, some substances your body produces are harmful. They can damage your jawbone and ligaments around teeth.
If process continues, the teeth become loose. Deep pockets form between the teeth and gums. These pockets are places where bacteria grow. If this goes untreated, your teeth can become loose and fall out.
Periodontitis is not usually painful.
Older adults are more likely to have periodontitis.
